Fashion photographer Sophia Doak's home is a study in vintage pieces, quiet rituals and meaningful keepsakes. We visited Sophia in her Tamarama apartment to talk about her creative inspirations, what home means to her, and why the Fenestra rug became the foundation of her living space.

What most informs your creative perspective?

Curiosity, maybe, seeing the world in a certain way and wanting to capture that. Travel is a big one for me. Nothing inspires me more than new landscapes, food, wine, and connections. I know your problems can follow you, but how you look at them completely shifts. Connecting with different people. Books and movies.

How does your work as a fashion photographer influence your personal style and the way you approach your space?

I think working in an industry where there is a lot of everyone doing what everyone else is doing, and a high level of visibility around that, it is nice to have a sense of personal style. For me, this manifests more in my fashion than my home, but I stick to my guns with home as well. I know what I like! I am a big fan of Facebook Marketplace and the local vintage shop for homewares. There's something that feels special about finding a piece you love this way.

How does living so close to the ocean shape the way you experience your home?

I have a very busy mind, and it helps me feel calm, which means home feels like a calmer space.

What does home mean to you right now?

Sanctuary.

What are some of your favourite rituals or slow moments at home?

My morning coffee. I fall asleep at night feeling excited to wake up and make my stovetop brew. Also, I read a lot at home. Always read before bed and sometimes in the mornings. Spending time with Lexi, my friend and housemate, whether it's laughing so hard our neighbour once thought we were having a house party or watching a movie.

Morning essentials

Are there particular pieces in your home that hold special meaning or carry strong memories for you?

My mugs. I know it sounds small, but I have a really special collection of mugs given to me by special people in my life, and they mean a lot to me. It's nice thinking of someone dear to you every time you take a cup off the shelf for your coffee. Also, I recently got some pieces from McMullin after a shoot I feel especially proud of, and it's a nice reminder that I did that.

What drew you to the Fenestra rug, and how does it shape the feel of the room?

Love at first sight. This rug is the highlight of our space. I love the combination of blue and brown, and it adds a pop of something to the room without being overwhelming. It feels retro but also modern, and it complements our little home perfectly.
